Iran spans mountains, deserts, a green coastal north and a warm Gulf south, so a single 'best time' does not fit the whole country. In general, spring and autumn are comfortable across most of the center, summer is ideal for the cool north, and winter is pleasant on the southern islands. Planning around the region you intend to visit is the key.
Spring (roughly March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most pleasant seasons for touring Isfahan and Shiraz, with mild weather ideal for exploring squares, mosques and gardens. Summers are hot and winters cool, so the shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for sightseeing.
Summer (June to August) is the prime time for the green north around Rasht and the Caspian Sea — mild, lush and occasionally rainy — a popular escape from the summer heat. Spring is also beautiful, though the region can be humid and rainy for much of the year.
Kish Island is at its best in winter (December to February), warm and sunny when much of the region is cold. Summers there are hot and very humid, so winter and early spring are the comfortable months for beaches, diving and shopping.
Mashhad and Qom welcome pilgrims year-round, but crowds peak during Muharram and Safar, around Arbaeen and in the summer holidays. If you plan to travel in a peak season, expect busier shrines and book your flight early.
